When Wright or Ayers rear "their ugly heads" let’s not forget that John McCain spent a year soliciting end-timer Pastor John Hagee’s endorsement. While he was ultimately forced to denounce Hagee’s support after some of Hagee’s not so PC comments about Catholics, Gays and the Holocaust surfaced, the press never really questioned McCain on the insanity of wanting on his side an end-time theologian who is actively working to precipitate Armageddon.
Read on to find out how Hagee still very much factors into the McCain picture!
Consider first that a personal relationship with a pastor is not the same as a political bargain with a pastor where there's an exchange of promises. "You help get me elected and I'll . . . ." Seeking and then accepting an endorsement has a built in quid-pro-quo, so by definition McCain’s outreach to Hagee was way more pernicious than Obama’s personal relationship with Wright.
Second, it would seem that all reasonable people, no matter their party affiliation, would agree that anybody who wrote the following in 2006 should not be allowed within a million miles of America’s foreign policy agenda:
"Just before us is a nuclear countdown with Iran, followed by Ezekiel’s war, and then the final battle – the Battle of Armageddon. The end of the world as we know it is rapidly approaching. . . . . Rejoice and be exceedingly glad --- the best is yet to be." (P. 122, Jerusalem Countdown: A Warning to the World, by John Hagee, 2006)
Take a look at Bill Moyer’s brilliant expose on Hagee and his ilk (Bill Moyers Journal: Christians United for Israel) to understand the real and present danger these religious literalists pose to society. Compare their intent to put us on the brink of global annihilation to Ayers’ goal of pulling America out of an un-winnable war with more than 45,000 soldiers already dead. While Ayers’ goal does not justify his violent means, let us not forget the violence sparked by Hagee’s insistence on moving Jews from around the world into contested Palestinian territories based on the book of Revelation. It has been caustic salt in a very open wound.
The real clincher is that Hagee is still around, working in tandem with McCain’s closest foreign policy adviser, Senator Joseph Lieberman. Just this past July, Lieberman was a speaker at Hagee’s Christians United for Israel lobbying conference in Washington DC (he was the key note speaker last summer) and for the second year in a lovingly compared Hagee to Moses.
For all the grief Obama is getting about long ago and far away associations that lead to absolutely nowhere, I think it’s time for the media and the people to demand that McCain come clean on his one degree of separation from Hagee. Mr. McCain, your association with Lieberman and Hagee put the entire world at risk – you should either ask Lieberman to denounce this fanatical end-time agitator, or be the maverick you say you are, and denounce Lieberman himself.
