I have never been a fan of Peggy Noonan's politics. She has always struck me as one of the original Heathers. A bit older, a bit more clever at covering her Junior High social agenda, and a classic bridge between the social climbing, Country Club Republicans, and the thugs of the 94' Revolution. I dislike her commentary so much that I rarely read her column, and have nothing good to say about her opinions.
But, she is a writer. She has a skillful, and occasionally impressive, way with the language, even if I often feel she prostitutes that gift in the service of political evil. In flashes of brilliance one can see why she was a speech writer for a President. The turn of phrase can sparkle.
I just heard her create one of those turns.
On Hardball, Ms. Noonan and Gene Robinson were discussing the latest stupidity from Sarah Palin and the "Hussain" comment by a County Sheriff. After the usual banter, Chris Mattews turn to Peggy and said, "Well? What do you think of this tactic?"
Peggy Noonan, without missing a beat, said, "They are not big enough for the moment."
That's it! That's the line that we should be beating into the electorate.
Mccain and Palin are not big enough for the moment. This moment in history, when everything that could go wrong, has gone wrong, we need big ideas, big minds, and big dreams.
They are not Big Enough for the moment.
Kudos, Ms. Noonan. When you do that kind of thing, much can be forgive.
