The graphic below the fold may help those who lack a grounding in cowboy lingo to grasp the difference between two nearly opposite terms: Maverick and Sidekick.
The dictionary (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary) defines "maverick" thusly:
"Function: noun Etymology: Samuel A. Maverick †1870 American pioneer who did not brand his calves" with two main definitions:
- an unbranded range animal ; especially : a motherless calf
- an independent individual who does not go along with a group or party
Yet we all know that those who (with increasing desperation) promote a McCain presidency are banking on an association with the 1957 - 1962 ABC Western TV series. The James Garner character was especially well-liked and memorable, a smart, honorable man, if a gambler. Unfortunately, the lead character in the current production know as Election '08 has more in common with a different brand (if you'll pardon the pun) of stock Western character.
Defined since 1906 as "a person closely associated with another as a subordinate or partner" the sidekick could be either good (a Robin to a Batman) or evil (a Mini-Me to a Dr. Evil, or a Peter Lorre to a Sydney Greenstreet).
