Our good friends at mudflats have been diligently monitoring this situation for us. Mudflats' denizens and Alaskans for Truth need our help:
All of the members of the Legislative Council who were present at the last meeting have already voted to do the right thing once. They've gone ahead with the investigation and overcome all the GOP's legal obstacles. Now, these honorable people are under tremendous pressure to vote against the release of this report. They need our support, and they need to be reminded that this issue is important not only to Alaskans, but to all Americans.
If Sarah Palin scares you as she does me, please understand that the followiing effort can derail her candidacy without having to win a cutesy popularity contest! I have a simple cut-n-paste e-mail, with addresses, below for the Alaskan Legislative Council members for you to demonstrate our collective concern. Can't be any easier than that! Join us.
Mudflats is requesting support to phone, mail or e-mail our demands for release of this to the legistative council to overcome GOP interference. You can read the posts here: Mudflats
Excerpted from Mudflats:
Urge our lawmakers to accept Steve Blanchflower’s report on October 10 and promptly make it available to the public. U.S. voters deserve this information!
KNOW THE FACTS and include them in your emails and phone calls:
LIE: The State Legislative Council is a group of partisan Democrats.
FACTS:
· Ten Republicans and four Democrats are voting members of the State Legislative Council.
· All Council members who were present (eight Republicans and four Democrats) voted unanimously to hire Stephen Branchflower, a former prosecutor, to investigate possible wrongdoing by the Governor’s office
SMEAR: Walt Monegan was fired for poor job performance.
FACTS:
· Sarah Palin has changed her explanations as often as she changes her shade of lipstick. Since July, she has claimed that a) she didn’t fire Walt Monegan — he quit, b) she did fire Walt Monegan but it was only in order to go a "new direction," c) she claimed it was for poor job performance; and the latest one d) Walt Monegan is insubordinate and a rogue cop. She seems unable to make up her mind.
· Walt Monegan has a record of 30 years of exemplary public service to the State of Alaska, including his role as of Commissioner of AK Dept. of Public Safety.
LEGAL WRANGLING: Talis Colberg, on the advice of the McCain campaign, has filed suit to quash legislative subpoenas.
FACT: This is an attempt by Colberg to protect himself from the consequences of his blatant and possibly illegal intrusion in the legislative investigation, and to prevent the release of the Branchflower report!
While it's always best to create your own, here is a suggested e-mail for those who are pressed for time:
Dear Sirs/Madames:
I am not a citizen of your great state. However, as a concerned American, I respectfully request that you accept and release to the American public, Stephen Branchflower's report concerning allegations of official misconduct perpetrated by Governor Sarah Palin on October 10, 2008 as has been previously announced.
Despite claims otherwise, all Council members who were present (eight Republicans and four Democrats) voted unanimously to hire Stephen Branchflower, a former prosecutor, to investigate possible wrongdoing by the Governor’s office. Therefore, this is NOT a partisan attack. The only partisanship in this affair seems to emanate from Talis Colberg who, on the advice of the McCain campaign, has filed suit to quash legislative subpoenas. Possibly an act of witness tampering.
Furthermore, after 30 years as an exemplarary Alaskan public servant, Walt Monegan does not deserve the smear campaign launched against him. Justification for his removal from office has changed at least four times since July.
I understand that tremendous and unwarranted outside pressure has been brought to bear on you as a legislative body. However, Governor Palin's entry onto the national stage, prior to a proper vetting, means that this is no longer an "Alaska-Only" issue.
Without transparency, there can be no accountability.
Failure to release Mr. Branchflower’s report can only lead to further uncertainty about the integrity of the Republican vice-presidential candidate, while at the same time casting doubts on the integrity of Alaska’s legislators. Furthermore, this report may have wide-ranging implications that could ultimately affect the fate of our nation and indeed, the world.
Respectfully submitted,
Send it here. Members of the Legislative Council:
