2006 will be an exciting year in California. Voters will have a chance to approve, or disapprove, of the performance of our newest Hollywood governor.
However, I would like to focus on a less glamorous race: the race for Lt. Governor. Cruz Bustamante expended what little political capital he had during his disastrous gubernatorial campaign. He has been nearly invisible as Lt. Gov. since then.
I would like to see a draft movement develop to get Matt Gonzalez to run for Lt. Gov. as both a Democrat and a Green. Not only would he have a decent shot (he was a bulldog of a candidate against the much better funded Newsom) but the race would set the stage for more cooperation between the Democrats and Greens, and groom a true progressive for the governor's mansion. Could it happen?
