On a quiet night when my beloved Phillies are currently losing to the Hollywood Dodgers (it's ok, I want to bring this series back to Philly anyway), I have decided to tackle a meta issue. Yes, infamous glorious metalicious meta.
That is the old adage from the NFL, often told to rookies or immature showboaters like Terrell Owens when they celebrate too much after scoring a touchdown.
I read Daily Kos every day, and on some days, every hour. I have been doing so for over five years now. I read now more than I write comments and diaries, because I have been very busy interviewing various candidates for office in Delaware as part of my role as a front pager on Delaware Liberal.
But every time I do come home to Daily Kos, at least half of the diaries on the Recommended List have little updates either at the top or at the bottom of the recommended diary expressing gratitude, joy, shock, and/or bewilderment at the notion that their diary was recommended.
Usually the diaries that contain these thankful updates are by Kossacks who are new to the Rec List, who have written very enjoyable anecdotes about what they have encountered on the campaign trail, their personal experiences, or about breaking news concerning the latest treachery from the McCain-Palin campaign or the latest polls showing Barack Obama cruising. But not always, because I think I have seen some other well established Kossacks offer the same update on occasion. Which makes me wonder if the inclusion of such an update is now some kind of diary rule that I missed. If it is, then I am sure I will be informed shortly.
But, please, for the love of God, stop.
Stop thanking me for recommending your diary.
For all that is good and holy in this world, stop.
Think of the children.
Let your diary stand on its merits.
Don't betray your shock that it was actually recommended.
Pretend like you have been on the Rec List before.
Our recommending your diary is our thanks for your great writing, for alerting us to new information, your opinions and experiences.
I don't want to be thanked for thanking you.
Now carry on
