This year seems like one of those B-grade horror movies that I would watch television on a wintry Saturday afternoon in Michigan in the 60's. The Monster That Wouldn't Die seems to have resurrected itself in the form of the John McCain campaign. After taking numerous bullets, the McBeast will take one more stab at becoming POTUS and making us all his slaves!
As I scan the Monday morning headlines, I see that Paul Krugman has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics and Bill Kristol is calling for the firing of the McCain. Then I note a Nate Silver post on 538 that surmises that one more McCain Hail Mary is coming.
As I see the upcoming week, McCain will have to field those nagging questions about how his running mate, the Alaskan Dummy, can represent a "Reformer" while being, herself, under the charge of abusing governmental authority.
There is Krugman. He has constantly blasted, in the manner that befits a Nobel winner, the McCain economic plans (and there have been many) on the Rachel Maddow Show, Countdown and Hardball. With this new-found credibility, how many media venues is he now going to be interviewed on regarding the current financial crisis and his opinion of the candidates? Not good for McCain.
Then there is that clamoring from the McCain base that is more than nervous about what is tilting toward an electoral landslide and huge majorities in both houses of Congress.
And finally, there is that little matter of a debate on Wednesday night. Yes, I know that McCain has promised to whip some blah, blah, blah. But has anyone noticed that McCain seems to be at an intellectual disadvantage during these contests? Could it be that the guy who finished 894 out of 899 at Annapolis didn't score so low because he was partying all the time, but rather because he just isn't that smart?
There is a rumor that Larry, Moe, Curly, Shemp and Bozo are asking for an audit of the class' grades to determine how McCain slipped past them in ranking.
So after talking a little trash talking and letting the women, Cindy and Sarah, throw all of the hate diatribes, what is our war hero to do? He can't match wits with Obama. He's already shown in two debates that he is afraid of Obama, so there won't be any throwing of haymakers. He faces a week of getting skewered by the Left (Krugman), the Right (Kristol) and the Supposed Center (MSM asking about Palin).
Of course, it's time for one more trick play. Silver indicates that it's the firing of the campaign complete with an apology for being hijacked. Others have surmised it will be yet another new economic plan. I'm partial to tossing the Dummy under the bus. Let's face it, the American public has grown tired of McCain's ventriloquist act.
Here's a poll, but don't feel constrained to these few choices. Shoot me a comment and when the rumblings in the McBushes cease and the new trick play emerges, you will be able to thump your chest boldly for having prophetically called it.
