I called it. I said in my last entry that it was all a house of cards on the verge of total collapse. It all hinges on trust. No one trusts anyone. The banks won't lend to each other because they distrust each other. Someone's got to step in and make the big gesture. And it has to happen soon. O can't make a move until he takes office in January, but at the rate things are going the economy may be completely busted then.
Oprah should make an enormous gesture like buying $10 million of GE or GM. She's got to say that she's going to hang on to her stock whatever the market does. If she did this, it would help restore trust in the market and people wouldn't be selling off their stock trying to get out before the Dow goes even lower. She is a beloved national icon who helped O in the beginning and should step in now to bail him out. Otherwise, it's going to be a pyrrhic victory come January. She's got the cash, she's worth easliy over a billion dollars. It's time for her to go big and stop acting like she's just one of the girls. She has the golden touch. A few days ago she praised a Wisconsin writer, David Wroblewski. She said his debut novel is "the best novel I've read in a long, long, long time." Guess what's happened to his sales. Right. Through the roof. Who knew that I would actually want to watch a press conference by W. Of course he blew it again. We need someone strong to take action.
By the way, who cares about Ayres. My parents say they remember Days of Rage and all that went on in that time. They were in the Dow Chemical riots herein Madison in 1967 protesting Dow's use of napalm. They said they wanted to do anything to stop that terrible war. They joke about being chased house to house while the police threw teargas at them. they said they really sympathized with Karl Armstrong when he and his brother bombed Sterling Hall in 1970. They were trying to shut down the Army Math Research Center. Of course it was really sad that that researcher was in the building when the bomb went off, but they thought building was clear of everyone. Anyway Karl Armstrong is out of jail now and sells juice on the Libarary Mall.
