"Something Wicked This Way Goes"
Yes, I agree with the author that there is something in the air. I agree that if our leaders had the opportunity to create an outbreak of some sort and then quarantine all of the almost 70% who now disapprove of them, they would in a heartbeat. But what has stunned me the last few weeks, since Katrina really, is how fast and how hard these neocons have fallen.
More below:
Cindy Sheehan was the start, I think. She stood up to a bully president, and said, "Until you tell me what noble cause my son died for, I will stay in this ditch."
And our yellow-bellied president did not have the courage to take a stroll down the road, or even ride his bike out, to talk to her. His stubborness and insecurity just did not allow him to give the woman some common kindness. And many Americans saw what this shallow and selfish man was truly like: he had to "get on with his life," you know.
The Iraq war has been showing how ineffective the neocons truly are; just think: one year ago, something like 65% of Americans thought Bush was handling the Iraq war well. Now it is less than 35%.
Why, do you think, there has been a change? Maybe because we call in to talk shows, and write LTEs, and push our representatives to speak up, and this community and others pushed for Howard Dean, a truthteller, to point the way to the truth for the Americans to follow.
I will never forget the faces of the people, black and white, standing outside the Convention Center in New Orleans, screaming, begging and pleading for water, food, basic human needs. And other Americans also had these images seared onto their brains.
One woman was holding a child, a baby, about a year old, crying, pleading for help, saying that it was getting harder and harder for her to wake her baby up. This was Tuesday, or Wednesday, at the latest. And you know, it doesn't seem to matter who Hannity and Limbaugh and O'Reilly blame for the lack of emergency aid to these people - Americans found out that Bush, the ultimate bubble boy, did not even know that these people were suffering. And I don't think many Americans can forgive him for this.
The scandals - it is not one that sticks out, it is all of them. Cronyism in important jobs, DeLay, Frist, Rove, Liddy, they all stink to high heaven, and this administration is sinking fast.
So how, do you think, these people would muster up the support of the military and the rest of America to take us out?? Was there not a diary on this site today or yesterday about a general in Iraq who no longer knows if he has the moral authority to lead his men into battle?? Is he going to lead his soldiers against fellow Americans?? And are all the soldiers neocons too, who would just go along with the slaughter of their fellow citizens? I believe many generals and soldiers would refuse. Very few Americans would truly want to "kill lib'ruls." They may call talk radio and talk tough about us, but I really don't think they could do it. And if they try, well, everyone has the right to defend themselves. Besides, we see how effective our government is in coming up with a plan and doing the grunt work to insure that it is implemented effectively, haven't we? I just don't see the end coming, as outlined in "Something Wicked This Way Goes."
If the other diarist had written this in November 2004, with people believing in Bush's political capital, then I would be worried. But his approval rating is, what??? 38%??? That's a lot of Americans he has to "quarantine", and he has a very limited military to do it with. And most importantly: do you really think Americans will be led to slaughter like sheep?? Nothing in our genetic make-up can lead you to believe that the American people, whose grandfathers had the balls to get on a ship and travel across the ocean to a land where they had nothing, would go quietly into the night.
No. Americans would fight for our freedom - freedom from terrorists or freedom from tyranny. We would never allow a second-tier puppet quais-dictator-wanna-be take away our way of life and our courage. I really think the idea of quarantine is very farfetched. And I hope we do not allow fear to paralyze us. Let's shine the light of truth on what these people have done to our nation, let's keep talking truth to all we meet, but let us not be made ineffective by unwarranted fear.
