I'm sure not many people are aware, but I'm working toward a degree in Journalism (and Broadcasting, but that's a different diary). I also work in the News Department of the local NBC affiliate.
This semester I'm taking a Literary Journalism class - we've studied people like Norman Mailer, Hunter Thompson, and other similar journalists.
We also have to try to BECOME part of that genre...at least temporarily.
One of the assignments is writing a news story as a first-person narrative. I wasn't sure what kind of story I wanted to do, so I talked to my professor this morning, brain stormed a bit through my first class of the day, and came up with my idea: I want to cover Election Night with my local Campaign for Change.
Which means that it's going to be MUCH easier to justify time spent working at Obama HQ because it's Homework. It's part of background prep for what is, essentially, 25% of my final grade.
I'm planning to spend at least 3 afternoons a week there, helping in the office, doing anything that's deemed necessary. Much more than my current afternoon when I can squeeze it in between work and school.
Of course, having a job in the news world, I won't get the night completely off (as I just learned at a 2-hour meeting: .all hands for Election Night). I guess I'll have to add the POV of the newsroom in some fashion.
But I'll be able to stay for at least a good portion of the night - maybe until Virginia results come in.
So...any particular angles that Kossacks think I should look for on this little adventure? I'm willing to take suggestions.
And, because I want to add a poll:
