Update: I just noticed the diary immediately below this one contained an identical word as was in my original diary title, so I have changed my title. My apologies to AuntieM and to Daily Kos for this inadvertent boo-boo.
I've been hanging around Daily Kos for a while now, reading, commenting, and occasionally posting a diary.
One thing I've never gotten about this place is the antipathy against wingnuts. Especially against right wingnuts. After all, most wingnuts are right anyhow. That is to say, they screw clockwise, just like most other nuts. In fact, I think it's pretty hard to find a wingnut that screws counter-clockwise, or backwards as I call it. I know you can find lots of ordinary nuts (cursenuts, or hexnuts, I think you call them) that screw backwards, but backwards-screwing wingnuts? Not so much.
So I've just been wondering: what's everybody got against wingnuts?
I mean, personally I find wingnuts to be very useful at times, like when I need to get my nut(s) off in a hurry, without using my tool. When I use a wingnut, my fingers alone can get the job done. Heck, even my wife can get my wingnut off by hand, most of the time anyway.
Wingnuts come cheap, too. Just about the same price as regular nuts. I get my wingnuts down at the hardware store, and the ladies there always help me pick my nuts if I ask. I love those gals.
One problem with wingnuts though is that they won't screw in a tight corner, but if you're trying to screw them somewhere your fingers aren't supposed to go in the first place, then you wouldn't want to use one anyway. Another problem with wingnuts is that sometimes they get off all by themselves, usually when you don't want them to. This means you have to use a washer on them, even though they were plenty clean to begin with.
One of the cool things about wingnuts to me is that, well, they have wings. Now, I've seen some tv commercials about other things that have wings, but those things aren't very screwable (IMHO), and it's the easy screwability of wingnuts that I enjoy the most. And even though wingnuts can't fly, at least they still have wings. You know, like an angel. So from that perspective wingnuts are angelic, and so to be adored, even though they can't fly like angels do.
Another fact about wingnuts is that because you can screw them with your fingers they're less prone to stripping. I know if I was a wingnut I be happy to be able to be finger-screwed without having to worry about stripping. That's a convenient time-saver to me.
So, I guess I'm just kinda fond of wingnuts. I keep several of them around in my garage, in sacks. When I need to get my nut off fast, without stripping, I reach for one of those angelic wingnuts.
Wingnuts: handier than pockets on a shirt.
Here's a picture of a wingnut. Sort of looks like a flying saucer, something from outer space, don't you think?
So tell me, am I wrong to consider wingnuts "my friends"?
