If it's this hard to re-register to vote in California, I can only imagine how screwed up the rest of the country is!
As I write this, I am on hold with the LA County Registrar's office...
My fiancee and I moved in August from Hollywood to Culver City (A mere 15 mile move) and we had sent in a change of address to the post office and DMV. The DMV change of address said we could re-register to vote through them, so we checked off those boxes and mailed it off. That was July 29th. It is October 15th, and yesterday we got a forwarded sample ballot for the Hollywood municipal elections from our old address. We tried calling the registrar's office from the phone number listed on lavote.com and votersunite.org and we were put on hold for >30 minutes. No one answered the phone, nothing. Now we don't know if we're registered to vote at our new address, or if we are going to have to drive 45 minutes through rush hour traffic in Hollywood/Beverly Hills just to cast a ballot!
And before you respond, yes, we sent in the $1.50 charge to verify our registration two weeks ago and still have not gotten confirmation. We even registered through the mail mid-September, just to be sure, and still haven't received any sample ballot or information concerning our new polling place!
This worries me because I don't know if this problem is endemic to the air-headedness of California, or if something shady is afoot. You'd figure in a heavily blue-state and blue city, the second largest in America, they'd have a better handle on getting people to vote.
Ridiculous. I've been on hold 45 minutes now. I give up. I'm gonna register through ACORN ;).
UPDATE: I have faith this issue would get sorted out, but I can see why people feel disenfranchised when it comes to voting.
