I know two people in my immediate group of friends/family/associates who are, at best, lukewarm McCain supporters. One is a co-worker whose wife is very much for Obama (so she is working on him). He is for McCain and his reasoning is his military background. My sister is the other. Her husband is in the Navy and decidedly voting McCain as well.
Over the past few weeks, I have been talking to my sister about the election, debates, etc. My husband and I are the only Democrats in my family. Her and I are very close and she has let me rant and rail against the Republicans like a trooper. She isn't terribly passionate about the Republican party and hasn't really paid attention to the news, etc. (yes, low information voter), but I had no doubt where her vote was going in November. That is until this morning. We talk on the phone every morning and afternoon on the way to and from work. She asked me if I watched the debates last night, and what did I think because she didn't watch them. I told her that according to all the polls, Obama won. McCain did okay the first half hour, but then he started attacking Obama and that was it for him. Then I said "I really, really want you to look at my guy. Honey, McCain and Palin scare me. Barack has some great ideas and policies especially regarding the economy. McCain just doesn't have a clue" Her reasoning for voting McCain is her husband is in the military and the Republican party has done a great job convincing them that the Dems want to close bases, cut out military spending etc. I then asked her if I could send her some information regarding Barack's position on the military, veterans etc, would she look at it? She said sure, she absolutely would. Now, my sister is pro-choice and doesn't think the government should stop people who love each other from marrying or forming civil unions - so I knew the "social issue" battle was already won! First thing this morning I sent her the following links:
http://obama.senate.gov/...
www. barackobama. com/issues/veterans/
www.vetsforobama.org
I have no doubt she will look at them, digest them, and possibly even change her mind.
Next up, my co-worker. He came into my office this morning, closed the door and said "McCain really pissed me off last night" I was like WTF?! I about fell out of my chair. He went off on how negative he was, how bad he was attacking Obama, how he was all over the place when speaking of his policies. This guy is only voting for McCain because of his own military background. I emailed him the same information I sent my sister as well as a blog I wrote about "why I am voting for Barack Obama". He came into my office this afternoon and said "Thanks, you gave me a lot to think about"
We live in Florida so every vote taken from McCain and given to Obama is huge. I honestly think I made a good case to both of them and hopefully they will "pull the lever" for Barack this November.
