Well, well.  Looks like one of our least-liked Democrats is being investigated by the FBI for steering FEMA money to a second mistress in ecxhange for sex, in addition to the questions about the $121,000 he paid in hush money to the first one.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy...links to story and original diary by brownsox below the fold.

First the  background, but a quick summary is this guy's a Blue Dog who woudn't endorse Obama, won election in Larry Craig's former district on a platform of bringing morality back to Congress, then proceeded to cheat on his wife with two women (that we know of).

Enter the FBI from the nytimes:

The FBI is looking into whether Mahoney hired the first mistress -- and put her on the federal payroll -- so she wouldn't reveal their affair, the person said. The woman, Patricia Allen, has not returned repeated calls.

Whoops!  But wait, it gets even better.

The FBI is also looking into whether Mahoney helped Martin County secure a $3.4 million reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for hurricane damage in exchange for sex with a county official in 2007, the federal law enforcement official said.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not relishing the thought of losing a seat, but this is the perfect example of how we need to be supporting better Democrats, not hypocrits that give the Republicans ammunition against us.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

but if there's an FBI investigation, the smart thing for Mahoney to do is decline to take his seat in '09.  I'm still betting he'll win--the Repub running against him seems like a total wingnut, plus the Obama tsunami in Palm Beach and St. Lucie will be too much for the Repubs to overcome.

I'm apparently way too easy to break up with, I've never blackmailed anybody. No wonder I am poor.

Mahoney's on the agenda to speak, but I'll be surprised if he shows.  If he does I have some not so nice things to say to him.

The FBI has been camping out in Palm Beach County for the last year or so doing investigations of local pols, we have two former county commissioners in the slammer right now for abuses of their offices.

The Palm Beach Post gave TM an untimely endorsement over Tom Rooney the day before the story broke, they rescinded it today and asked him to step down.

Mahoney's in deep shit and my money says he resigns before the election.

Can the local Dem party withdraw its endorsement of Mahoney and nominate a write-in alternative?

We'd have quite an uphill battle is Mahoney withdraws, since a replacement Dem would still have to tell people to vote for Mahoney's name. In 2006 the guy who replaced Foley on the GOP slot had to do just that.
Sad to say, we're probably better just writing off this seat, working to get rid that stupid ballot restriction, and work to unseat Rooney in 2010.

Ever since Tim Mahoney took office two years ago, i've hated him. It's not because of his centrist views i could care less about that. I hated him because of his constant moaning and complaining. Within the first few months since taking office, Mahoney said that this is the toughest job i've ever had. Then decided to not go to the convention "unless they really" like Nancy Pelosi would have a tough time running the convention without your help and support.

You know what Tim, if being a congressman is so tough, why you decide to run two years ago? What's sad is i'm only 21 years old (with a deep love for the game of politics) and I could of told him that being a Congressman is not a 9-5 job. It requires long back breaking hours in order to get legislation passed and please your constitutents. Not to mention any free time you have from being in DC will be spent on meeting up with your constitutents, which is crucial for a freshman lawmaker representing a swing district.

So fuck him, he gets what de deserves. Wash our hands with this man and kick him out. Personally this is a favor for him because now he gets to leave the office he hates working for.

Let's put it this way, I be shedding tears if this was Dennis Kucinich, i'm doing backflips since it was Tim Mahoney.
