My husband's Bubbie is 91 years old and lives in the great state of North Carolina. She grew up in Detroit and has voted Democratic her whole life. We visited her after the primary and found out that she supported Hillary but did not vote.
My husband's aunt (Bubbie's daughter) confided in us then that she didn't think Bubbie would be willing to vote for Obama. As she's gotten older, she has been known to occasionally make a disparaging remark about "the blacks." When my husband picked up the phone to call her tonight, I suggested he broach the subject. "Remember the great schlep!" I told him.
Find out what happened after the jump.
Mark got Bubbie on the phone and they chatted for a few minutes. Then he passed the phone over to our six year old for her to say hello, and when he got the phone back he was ready to bring up voting for Obama.
But Bubbie asked him first, "Did you watch the debate last night?"
Mark said that he had, but before he could say anything more, Bubbie barked, loud enough that I could hear it too, "John McCain is a crook! He's crooked. You can't trust him! Did you know they almost kicked him out of Congress?"
She went on in this vein for several minutes, then she transitioned into talking about Sarah Palin. "She doesn't know anything! She's a dummy, and McCain is a dummy for picking her."
And her take on Obama: "He's smart and eloquent. McCain is just jealous. He wishes he could be smart like Obama."
She is in poor health and has trouble getting around, so Mark then asked if she had someone to drive her to the polls. She said she was voting absentee, and she already sent in her ballot!
