Jan Brewer, the Republican secretary of state, has interpreted a law requiring campaign workers to stay 75 feet from a polling place to mean that anyone wearing anything, be it a T-shirt or campaign button, will not be allowed into a polling place. This is a link to the story on the AZCentral news website. link
The ACLU is trying to fight this saying that it could cause people to have to leave their place in line or go home, and possibly cause people to miss out on voting. They've also tried to argue that polling sites should provide jackets or some kind of clothing to cover such clothing, but the state has argued back that nothing in the law requires them to do this. With so many young voters (mostly Obama supporters) voting this year, and the tendency of younger people to express themselves with their clothing, this smells like yet another way the GOP is getting creative with voter suppression. Even though most consider my state a lock for McCain, please let everyone you know who is planning to vote in AZ about this crazy law so that none of us are denied or delayed voting.
