John McCain has based his political future on tying Barack Obama to William Ayers and to ACORN, a group he says "maybe perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history in this country, maybe destroying the fabric of democracy."
In light of these attacks, it is very troubling to find that Mr. McCain is not merely 'linked', but indeed has been a longtime member of an organization that has engaged in actions that have systematically worked to unravel the same 'fabric of democracy' he claims to be so concerned about.
McCain's membership in this organization is troubling, since members of this organization were convicted for illegally interfering with Democratic GOTV efforts in 20042002. Are these the sort of actions Mr. McCain wants to be associated with?
Additionally, this organization has been deeply involved in the wrongful removal of tens of thousands of registered voters from the voter rolls in Florida in 2000. Would a decent politician remain a member of such a group?
This is even more disturbing when you learn that this organization has repeatedly engaged in efforts to remove specific voters from the voter rolls in a manner that has been ruled unlawful. A repeating pattern of malfeasance by an organization is extremely troubling when a presidential candidate is found to be a member.
And that's only the beginning of the troubling associations John McCain's membership in this organization brings up. Former heads of the DOJ voting rights division have rebuked official actions taken by members of this organization as improperly and illegally injecting partisan politics into election enforcement, multiple times in recent years.
And, famously, another member of this organization lost his position as Attorney General in a scandal involving the firing of US Attorneys who would not engage in partisan election-related prosecutions.
When you consider that this organization not only has been implicated so many times in improper electioneering effort, but that members have also been tied to illegal arms sales to terrorist nations, John McCain's membership in this organization raises very troubling questions that Americans deserve the answers to.
But to learn that John McCain launched his political career as a member of this organization--
Well, that's just too much for a decent voter to stomach.
