I don't get tired of reading the "I just voted" diaries, so I hope other people will not mind another.
This year marks the second time in my life that I am voting absentee. The first time was when I was in college and just turned 18. I felt more of a connection to my home state than to the state where I went to college, so I wanted to help elect a new governor there.
This time, I checked the box that says "I plan to be away from the town where I am registered for the entire time that the polls will be open on election day" because I will be working GOTV.
I'm committed to going to NH, but if that looks like a complete blow-out, I may stay in CT and work for Himes or Murphy.
Details of my vote after the break.
CT has two questions on the ballot this year.
Question one asks if there should be a constitutional convention called to amend or revise the constitution.
I Voted No.
Aparently the CT constitution calls for this question to be placed on the ballot every 20 years. I'm always worried that conventions will lead to demagoguery, especially this year with the recent CT ruling in favor of Gay Marriage.
Question two asks if the constitution of CT should be revised to allow any person who will have turned 18 before the day of a regular election to vote in the primary for that election.
I voted Yes.
A plain english rule would help here. There is an explanation in a separate guide, but I bet that's not automatically handed out if you're not voting absentee. For those needing a translation, a yes would mean that 17 year olds could vote in primaries if they're turning 18 before the general election. This seems like a no-brainer to me. If you're going to be eligible for the general election, you should have a vote as to who will be on the ballot.
Then we get to the races.
Presidential Electors for:
I voted for Obama and Biden, of course.
It is an exciting feeling. Nov. 4th can't get here fast enough. For the first time in my life, I voted for a man who I think my grandchildren will read about in their history books. Yes, they probably will read about him because he broke the color barrier, but I am expecting that they will read about him as we read about FDR. I expect that he will be remembered as a truly great president.
Of possible news is that Nader/Gonzalez is the only minor "party" presidential ticket on the ballot. No Green, no Libertarian, and no one else.
No Senate races in CT this year, so next up for me is:
Representative for Congress:
Rosa DeLauro.
CT-3 is not a competitive district. I freely admit that I would not have been able to name her Repubican opponent (Bo Itshaky) before reading the ballot. Rosa was cross endorsed by the Working Families party, but I voted for her on the Democratic line.
After that comes
State Senator:
Leonard A Fasano.
Len Fasano is a Republican, but he's not far right, and he does seem to think about issues. He's very popular and running unopposed. My choice was to vote for him as a Republican, vote for him on the Working Families line, or leave the race blank. I decided to give the nod to the Working Families Party.
State Representative
Elizabeth Esty.
I may diary about this one later. Elizabeth Esty knocked on my door, canvassing for herself about a month ago. Our current (10 year incumbent) State Rep is a guy named Al Adnolfini. Every time he sends me a mailing, he always hits my hot button issues in the wrong direction. He is a classic low taxes, no government except for friends Republican. I was planning to vote against him no matter what. Five minutes into talking to Mrs Esty, I was no longer solely voting against the incumbent. I was voting for her.
Due to gerrymandering, I'm in her district (CT State 103rd), even though most of her district overlaps with CT-5 (Chris Murphy) instead of CT-3. Last weekend, I was able to go canvassing for her and Chris in the town next door. I got a second opportunity to chat with her. I'm still very impressed. I'll be working for her again next weekend, and, if New Hampshire looks very good for Obama (10% or more lead) I may consider staying home for GOTV weekend and trying to put her over the top. We could use another rising star at the state level.
Anyway, that's it, except for
registrar of voters
I voted for Holly LaFond, the Democrat, but I think the Democrat and the Republican both win.
