I've seen very little about this troubling ballot initiative in Colorado, but it seems that after getting burned in Ohio by the stealth Christian conservative turnout for the Ohio same sex marriage amendment in 2004, maybe we should be somewhat concerned.
For those who don't know, there's a ballot initiative in Colorado known as Amendment 48. The amendment states:
Shall there be an amendment to the Colorado constitution defining the term "person" to include any human being from the moment of fertilization as "person" is used in those provisions of the Colorado constitution relating to inalienable rights, equality of justice, and due process of law?
Section 1. Article II of the constitution of the state of Colorado is amended by the addition of a new section to read:
Section 31: Person defined. As used in sections 3, 6, and 25 of Article II of the state constitution, the terms "person" or "persons" shall include any human being from the moment of fertilization.
While we in the reality based community might read this and think "Wow, this is nuts!", the most recent poll by Rasmussen at the end of September revealed that 41% of likely voters in Colorado believe that life begins at conception. Is it possible that the Obama campaign is missing how this might manifest itself on November 4th? Remember that Colorado is home to James Dobson and Focus on the Family. Read his October newsletter linked here if you have any doubt that they are whipping the anti Obama, anti-choice voters into a frenzy over abortion rights.
