Our yard sign got stolen early this morning. This upset me greatly. Not because of the $30 I donated to the campaign in exchange for the sign; I would have given that money to the campaign anyway (and wish I could give more).
It upset me because we only live on a dead-end street. So it wasn't the work of a sign-stealer ripping highly-visible signs from major roads (that still would have pissed me off, but I'm not going to get too upset about the actions of some anonymous, jerky commuter.
No, I'm pretty sure that the sign was stolen by one of our neighbors; someone who lives on our street and has probably interacted with us decided to take something that belongs to us because they don't like our political views, and they want to try to suppress our view.So we responded.
At first, both my husband and I were inclined to put up a negative sign, attacking sign-stealers or under-handed republicans. But we both reconsidered; when your guy is the one with the superior message, it's better to be positive than negative. So we just made our own campaign signs--two large, heavy plywood signs. If our sign-stealer wants to come back for these, they're going to have to be quite industrious. But if they do, we'll just make more. Plywood is cheap, and the Obama logo is easy to paint.
I should give credit where it is due: I did nothing except accompany my husband to Home Depot and stand in between these signs for the picture. My husband did everything else.
So just a word of encouragement to anyone who has had campaign signs, stickers, or other material stolen. Just put up more.
And one last note: don't steal McCain/Palin signs. We need to be better.
