If you're like me, you've had a s**t eating grin all morning due to the Big Ten Battleground Poll. Obama up 10 in Indiana? Unthinkable! And yet, it matches what I'm seeing and hearing on the ground.
But it isn't good enough! And I'll go over why after the fold!
On the ground in Indiana, McCain is getting his butt kicked. He has little to no presence. His yard signs are outnumbered 10 to 1 by Obama signs. I have yet to see a single person identify themselves as working for the McCain campaign.
Contrast that with Obama who has offices in just about every district, had supporters on every corner of Indiana University weeks ago registering voters. And now has a van waiting daily to shuttle voters from the Memorial Union to vote and back.
I've been saying for months, if Obama wasn't down by anymore than 5 points in the last poll before the election he would carry this state. If it's a tie or a lead, McCain is dead in the water.
You would think that might lead to people slacking off a little or coasting to the finish line. I'm here to tell you that is the absolute worst thing any of us Hoosiers could do. A potential big Obama lead isn't a reason to take it easy, it's a reason to fight harder!
10 points just isn't enough. Make it 15. Make it 20. Make it however big us Hoosiers can bust our asses to create.
Because this election isn't just about Barack Obama. It's about kicking the Republicans teeth in so hard that they don't recover for generations. It's as much about throwing Steve Buyer's pathetic ass to the curb as it is about putting Barack in the White House. It's as much about finally ending Mike Sodrels political career once and for all. It's as much about shocking the nation and sending Mark Souder home.
An Obama landslide in Indiana would be the slit in Republican's wrists we've been dreaming of for decades.
So please folks, don't rest on your laurels. Enjoy the poll, get a smile, and then get to work. If you haven't donated to any of the fine congressional candidates, please do so.
And this diary isn't just for Hoosiers. Everyone out there, this is a call to double down and fight even harder. If you happen to live in a God forsaken part of the country where Democrats have no hope, find someplace else to help. Darcy Burner could use your money, for example. We have no shortage of incredible Senatorial candidates who could use your money or your time.
So please, my friends (pun intended), take this mornings good news as inspiration to work even harder. Because I'm changing my own tune in regards to Indiana. I've been joking with friends for a long time that I would be happy just to not have our state called 2 minutes after the polls close. I've changed my mind. I still want the state called 2 minutes after the polls close. I just want there to be a different result than the last 40 or so years.
