My relative's voter registration form arrived by mail one faithful day. It landed in the mail box, and to her, was a golden ticket to throw the Republicans out of office. Though she voted Republican for most of her adult life, this time it would have been different. She was tired of the fear mongering, lies and false rhetoric. She believed that the Bill Ayers attacks went over the line, and knew that being on a board was not the same as palling around with terrorists. She made fun of Sarah Palin saying that she could see Russia from her house. She even believes that Barack Obama would be a great president, and had a calmer temperament than Senator McCain. Unfortunately for her, her husband did not agree with her politics and suppressed her vote.
He snagged her registration form the mail box before she could fill it out and sent it back to the registration office, uncompleted. You see, her husband supports Senator John McCain, and he does not want Barack Obama to be president. So he did what he thought was right, and this war veteran and staunch defender of democracy suppressed a sacred right that he had fought to defend. He stole his wife's right to vote away from her because he felt that he could sway the outcome of an election. This may be the most unearthed form of voter suppression, but I can tell you from personal experience, it is happening.
The problem is that this is happening to people who are afraid to raise their voices in protest. They fear harsh consequences if they tell the truth, and fear the backlash they will receive from their husbands. So they keep quite, and while the election unfolds, we wonder why Senator McCain is doing better than the polls have indicated, and suppressed voters sit back in silence knowing that they cannot right a wrong.
