I'm sure most everyone remembers that Emily Litella was an SNL Weekend Update character played by Gilda Radner. Basically, she was a satire on the evening news op-ed by the well-intentioned, if under-informed, local news commentator, but Emily dealt mainly in mondegreens. For example, she would rant about such topics as violins on television, but I think my favorite is still her diatribe about natural race horses.
Gilda Radner is a beloved comedy figure, and I'm sure that reprising her characters is a touchy subject for the SNL folks, but this seems like a good time for Emily to speak her mind.
Well, here is my lame attempt at humor. Hopefully, this will get a chuckle as we go about the business of getting Barack elected and securing a filibuster-proof majority. I'm actually out the door to canvas, but thought others might need a laugh, too.
Here is a script for Tina Fey/Sarah Palin to reprise the role:
Anchor: Here with her latest commentary is Emily Litella.
Emily Litella: I'm here tonight to speak out against national erections. What's this I hear about national erections? Is this some sort of socialist plot? Every man has to have an erection on November fourth just because the government said so? Some states even have early erections. They make men walk around with erections until the end of October. Don't they know how dangerous that is? What are these men going to do with all these erections? All these guys walking around in public like that? It's just obscene.
Anchor: Ms Litella. . .
Emily Litella: Yes.
Anchor: I think you were supposed to talk about the national elections.
Emily Litella: National elections? Oh, well. Nevermind.
