My best friend Steve just called from our home state of North Carolina with incredible news: Stock car racing legend Junior Johnson has just endorsed Obama. Here's the first link that comes up on the teh Google, showing an email that some have already received via the Obama campaign:
Junior Johnson email via Obama for NC
This is as good an endorsement (in terms of impact on a specific state) as Obama could have received in North Carolina. Junior Johnson is (as Steve kept repeating) iconic in the state: the first NASCAR superstar, a man from the western Piedmont who started out as a moonshine runner. He is to NASCAR and to one sector of native-born North Carolinians what Robert Johnson is to guitar players.
Of course he did serve 11 months in federal prison in the 50s for moonshine running. Perhaps McCain will start citing Junior Johnson along with Bill Ayers in his rants about Obama and his "dangerous associations." (n.b. Johnson received a full pardon from noted liberal Ronald Reagan in 1986)
