I wanted to highlight the battle against Amendment 2 (the ban gay marriage amendment), but when I did a search I found and read hungrycoyote's diary and realized that he had said everything - better than I could - so I'm really using this to remind everyone of the issue and promote his diary. Here is his: Florida Amendment 2
A recap of the issue:
The amendment:
This amendment protects marriage as the legal union of only one man and one woman as husband and wife and provides that no other leagal union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof shall be valid or recognized
Of course the point is not to protect anything but to deny rights to a minority.
This amendment which was designed to impede the happiness of our gay/bi/transgender friends and family members could also impact others who for financial or other reasons can't enter into a traditional marriage.
The amendment must get more then 60% of the vote to pass. A current Mason Dixon poll has the amendment with 58 percent support. This is too close.
I have been happily married to a wonderful woman for 16 years - how in the world would letting someone else get married impact me and my marriage? Marriage, like morality, can't be legislated. I have seen many heterosexual couples who had the ring, the ceremony, the house, the kids and the license but did not have a marriage. Clearly Republican = mean spirited.
a heart + a heart = marriage
