I am very concerned that there is no Dkos (either frontpage or Rec'd diary) response to the "Redistribute the Wealth" drudge headline and charge being pushed by McCain and Fox. I know everyone is Jumping around yelling landslide and talking about the lead in the polls - but we can not let any attack go unanswered. Not now not even after we win the election. This cannot be left unchallenged. When I saw the attack I immediately turned to this site for the usually debunking. There was none - so I started digging.
The key point is that the tape has been edited to paint a picture that Obama was talking about economics not social justice.
'You know what, we as a court have no power to examine issues of redistribution and wealth inequalities. With respect to schools, that's not a race issue, thats a wealth issue and something and we can't get into."
Later in the interview, Obama seemed to concur with conservative and mainstream liberal scholars on the court's more modest view of its powers: (source)
This is left out of the edited version so when you hear the rest without this initail context you could construe it to mean otherwise. As opposed to a discussion of inequalities within public school based on local funding traditions and other issues.
But Sunstein argued that in the context of a long, legalistic interview, the words referred to the narrower forms of redistribution -- education, legal filing fees, legal representation, and other issues -- that had been discussed in the case Obama cited and in discussions around it.
Lastly, I think when someone brings up the "socialist" argument a good reply is to ask them if they think Regan was a Socialist since his top tax rate was even higher than what Obama is proposing.
Please help spread the word - we cannot leave this attack unanswered. We can not risk it becoming the swiftboat or Will Horton of this Election. Do not get cocky we can't afford another 4 years.
