Rain continues to fall in Philadelphia Tuesday, forcing Major League baseball to tentatively schedule the resumption of Game 5 for Wednesday night at 8:37 PM ET.
Also scheduled that night is Barack Obama's primetime ad buy/show, which will air on Fox (as well as CBS and NBC) from 8:00-8:30 ET.
While the Obama campaign was scheduling his television special with the networks, there was always the possibility of complication with the October 29th date due to the structuring of the World Series.
Though it will only be Game 5 due to the rain delay, MLB Commissioner Bud Selig had already given his approval to postponing the start of the game for a few minutes due to the Obama special.
Though that request came through Fox television, according to Selig, the commissioner is cool with it.
"It's eight minutes," Selig said. "I'd do that for anybody. That's just a question of being a good citizen."
Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love, only has one World Series title to date. The year was 1980, which brings us full circle in a campaign full of dates of significance. Will McCain be this year's Jimmy Carter? An incumbent (yeah, he's Bush III) being swept out by a sea of change...I like the ring of that and love the parallel. Let's play some baseball!
The game, which began Monday night, ended in a deluge of rain in the middle of the 6th inning with the game tied 2-2. The Phillies lead the series 3-1 and could potentially clench the World Series Wednesday night.
Commissioner Bud Selig went on to stay cautiously optimistic the game will be played out Wednesday night as planned.
While obviously we want to finish Game 5 as soon as possible, the forecast for today does not allow for us to continue the game this evening," commissioner Bud Selig said. "We are closely monitoring tomorrow’s forecast and will continue to monitor the weather on an hourly basis. We will advise fans as soon as we are able to make any final decisions with respect to tomorrow’s schedule.
