So I'm driving to work this morning, and Yet Another Political Ad comes on the radio. It's the voice of former N.H. Gov. Jeanne Shaheen saying, "I'll stand with President Bush on national security, the war on terrorism and to disarm Saddam Hussein. I supported the Bush tax cut." The Sununu ad then goes on to replay the "I'll stand with President Bush" clip about seven gazillion times in 30 seconds.
2002 sure is a long time ago now, eh? Back when those who dared to oppose the president's War On Terror [TM] were vilified as unpatriotic, terrorist-loving, un-American. How many politicians knew better, but were afraid to speak out, because they knew they'd "looking soft on terrorism?"
Here we are today, and a Republican Senator is criticizing his opponent for siding with the current Republican president. Sit for a minute and wrap your head around that.
Sununu isn't just "distancing himself" from Bush. Sununu is attacking a Democrat for supporting the Republican president.
Sure, Shaheen has been hammering Sununu for voting with Bush. But wouldn't you think a Republican candidate would be using another tactic besides lambasting a Democrat for supporting a Republican's "fight against terrorism?"
Wow. Things HAVE changed this year. At long last.
As for Shaheen, her campaign said she believed Bush when he said Iraq had WMDs but criticized Bush's Iraq policy starting in 2004. I still wish more Democrats (and Republicans) had been as prescient about Iraq as Barack Obama, what a different world we'd be living in. But I'll still enthusiastically take the Democrat who admitted by 2004 that Bush misled us into war over the Republican who voted with Bush 90% of the time.
