I need help from the political wordsmiths amoung us - how should I have responded when I was at a local charity meeting last night and one of the other attendees (someone I have disliked for a long time) compared Senator Obama to Adolf Hitler? My blood pressure is still boiling --
Last night I was at a meeting of a mother/daughter charity group that I belong to, and the moms had a meeting to discuss an upcoming event.
We took a break, and D. (who happens to be the president of the organization) asked one of the other moms if she was a "socialist" and one of those "spread the wealth around" types. I interrupted the conversation and said that I didn't think we should talk politics at a meeting like this, and that I found her tone and words offensive. (I have learned that talking politics with the rich white people in Las Vegas is a losing proposition and normally leads to lots of anger and hurt feelings.)
D. went on the say that her husband (the doctor) makes a lot of money and they want to keep it. The other mom said that while she agrees, Obama is a mesmerizing speaker. And then D. says, "Yeah but so was Hitler."
I was so upset that the president of our organization would be so tone deaf, racist and un-American (worse yet our hostess is Jewish) that I started to gather my things to leave but the reasonable moms in the group calmed me down and I ended up staying, but I actually felt like crying.
What should I have said back to D.? What should I have done? What should I do now? I don't want to resign from the organization because my daughters enjoy it and have met some nice friends.
Am I making too much of this? Should I just ignore the little witch, secure in the knowledge that Obama will make a fantastic president and will institute economic policies that will benefit ALL Americans?
Thank you for letting me vent - and I will appreciate all comments.
