Just when you thought the McCain campaign had reached the pinnacle of tone deafness, McCain’s fumbling running mate resets the bar. While in Erie PA yesterday, the backyard of both the Cleveland Indians and Pittsburgh Pirates, Sarah Palin gave a shout out to the (wait for it)...Philadelphia Phillies! Appropriately, the crowd booed:
It was a throwaway line meant to be a crowd-pleaser. But it fell flat.
On Thursday at a rally in Erie, Pa., Sarah Palin touted the victors in the World Series to thousands of supporters. "I am thrilled to be here in the home state of the world-champion Philadelphia Phillies," Palin said.
The crowd booed.
I suppose this is another sign the McCain campaign has us where they want us. At least she didn’t say dog-gone. She saved that for a later rally.
Erie PA is an arduously long drive from Philadelphia. Most residents of both areas would agree that they’re, in fact, worlds apart. Not surprisingly, the good people of Erie PA split their loyalties between the nearby Indians or Pirates. Also predictably, the feelings they house for their intrastate rivals, the Phillies, falls somewhere between venomous rage and utter disdain.
Palin’s failed pander would be the equivalent of Michelle Obama, during her visit to Gainesville, giving props to the Gators' intrastate rivals, Florida State. As the dj’s say on BBC radio, "it’s not a good look." I wouldn’t be surprised if this failed pander cost her a substantial amount of votes to add to the numerous Philadelphia Flyers she turned off when she trampled on their ice.
