So for people that don't know, AP just published a story claiming Barrack's Aunt is here illegally from Kenya. And it includes this graf:
Information about the deportation case was disclosed and confirmed by two separate sources, one of them a federal law enforcement official. The information they made available is known to officials in the federal government, but the AP could not establish whether anyone at a political level in the Bush administration or in the McCain campaign had been involved in its release.
Anyone believe they're clean? Didn't think so. The story.
The story notes that Zeituni Onyango,56, asked for asylum but was denied, and instructed to leave the country by a judge. She simply refused, and has been living here since.
At all accounts this is a woman who has not had anything to do with the campaign, who has been living quietly to herelf. The politics of immigration in this country are complicated, and even "Mr. Maverick" himself has conceded that the system is broken, and in need of an overhaul. However, as the last few months have shown, there's little intergirty that candidate McCain won't throw overboard to have a shot in this election. The story at first glance (and I suspect this would only become more clear with careful scrutiny)appears to really be a sad tale for this woman (and possibily a very unpleasant indictment of a politicized immigration department), but to be a nonissue in regards to Obama's campaign. Hopefully the press will realize that this is the case.
I gotta say though, it's even more motivation for me to get off my duff and volounteer this weekend and next week. It's not over till the votes are counted.
Edit: Just fixed some spellings. Typically, I don't write this early. :)
