My husband and I drove to Nashua, NH, from Boston, MA, to do whatever we could to help. My husband speaks Spanish, so they sent us to a Latino neighborhood. We knocked on about 50 doors - everyone we spoke to was for Obama. A couple of residents said they weren't voting. I don't get that, but whatever. Highlights:
An elderly gentleman exiting a tailor shop saw our stickers and asked us if we were Obama volunteers. He told us he was a lifelong Republican who was voting for Obama. He seemed very proud of this.
Two young women driving a car stopped the car stopped to ask us if we had any Obama stickers. My husband peeled the one off his jacket and gave it to them. They sped off squealing with delight.
A man raking leaves said he was undecided. Turned out he had fought in Korea and Vietnam, had a son in Iraq, worked for defense contractors before retiring. We talked with him for about a half hour - he was confused about all the rumors about Obama that he was getting in email. I directed him to FactCheck.org and spoke about my reasons for supporting Obama. By the time we parted he said he was leaning Obama, and asked me my name. When I told him he lit up and said that that was the name of his first born. I really think that sealed the deal.
A woman at one of the homes we knocked at said she too had volunteered for Obama and gave us some information about the neighborhood. After we thanked her and said good-bye she went back inside, but then suddenly turned: "I'm very excited", she said passionately, tears filling her eyes. It got me pretty choked up too. (I swear, the passion is always right there under the surface; I'm going to be a mess when they announce that he's won.)
We turned in our clipboards and stats and were heading out of town. Just before hitting the highway we passed a town green crammed full of Obama supporters holding signs. We honked and waved at them, they were jumping up and down and screaming, and everyone looked happy.
It was a good day in Obamaland.
