I've only lived in Indiana for 15 years, and I don't like it much. But I've become a die-hard Indiana Democrat, so I fear the potential of getting kicked in the butt again. Please view my other diary entries for my history as The Mad Canvasser of Indiana.
I'm shipping off to Logansport to work GOTV tomorrow and on Tues. (Look it up - it's an obscure small town in what we delicately refer to as the "outer counties.")
I've just spent ten days as an Election Judge at the top voting site in Tippecanoe Co. To those of you who might regard me as a "traitor," I can only say that I blind-knocked Blue Lafayette for a month, before our local Obama office opened. My status as a full-service Democrat is simply not open to question. It is said that I've knocked more doors in this county than any other vol. in the state. (Or even staffers, for that matter.)
The purpose of this diary is to make a simple observation. If we lose nationally (and I'm pessimisstic, because I've gone native as it were) ... I'd have to say that we'll lose a lot of our great constituencies - women, unions, GL, people of colour, educated voters - how can we persuade them to vote for us in the next few elections??
I met a voter a few weeks ago, who told me that the folks who would suffer the least - in the event of an economic collapse - were those who lived in lower-middle class neighborhoods. This voter aptly observed that these folks were survivors ... they'd just grow potatoes in their back yards, and tighten their belt, as usual.
I shudder to think what will happen to our party, and our constituencies, if Barack loses.
All I can say is that ... here in Indiana, we Democrats are used to losing. We are the survivors. We're used getting our @sses kicked. I don't think Kossack "blue staters" know how scary our Republicans are, or how difficult our LIVs (Low Info. Voters) are to deal with.
(Check out my diary entries for my record.) I'm shipping out to Logansport (look it up) tomorrow to do GOTV thru Tues. I'll be back to drown my sorrows in Laf. Or celebrate!!
I'm hoping for the best, but I'm preparing for the worst.
Because I'm an Indiana Democrat. I'm a survivor. In the event of the unthinkable ... we will rise and organize again.
