I was canvassing in Cleveland yesterday with Pam, an out-of-state Obama volunteer. Turns out we almost have a hometown in common, and she had incredibly funny "bad relationship" stories to tell in between the door knocks, so the three hours went fast.
When we finished our packet and returned to KC in Ohio's house, I had to head out immediately to pick up my nine-year-old daughter from her theatre rehearsal in Ohio City.
Meanwhile, Ellen, another out-of-state volunteer (with whom I have a favorite Indian restaurant in common!) was talking about neeeding some real food like vegetables and brown rice. I said hey, that's great, I'm driving right by Johnny Mango's. It's all fresh veggies and beans and yummy rice... and easy to get to!
I wrote out some directions for Ellen and also tried to let her follow my car--the one with the Obama sticker. But I was running late to get my kid, and when Ellen had obviously lost me I figured hey, she had my directions and my cell phone number.
Twenty minutes later, my cell phone rings. It's Ellen. She's telling me I'm really hard to follow but she is staying with me, and gives her location which is nowhere near where I actually am. She says I've been driving around in circles and making sudden turns, stuff like that, the whole time.
I say, um, Ellen, I think you're following someone else. But I get her fixed up with simpler directions and she's good to go.
Fast forward a couple of hours.
I come back to KC's house to debrief and to tell her how much fun I had canvassing with Pam. KC agrees that Pam is a delight but unfortunately Pam had been followed in her car by some creep for twenty minutes even after taking evasive action, driving around in circles, making sudden turns, stuff like that. Pam couldn't shake her stalker and even called the police...
KC has no idea why I'm laughing so hard.
