Frank defends call for cut in military spending
Rep. Barney Frank defended his call for a 25 percent cut in military spending in a brief interview with Politico on Monday, after his comments sparked a Republican firestorm.
"If we are going to get the deficit under control without slashing every domestic program, this is a necessity," Frank said.
"The Pentagon is probably the most wasteful organization in the federal government and people have given it a pass for years," Frank said.
Frank argued that even at 75 percent of its current military budget, America would "still be the strongest nation in the world," noting that if the country got out of Iraq it could quickly reduce military spending.
The propaganda these past years has molded us into believing we are in great peril. Our military budget for 2009 is $515.4 billion dollars. Why must we be afraid to speak plainly about the military? It is wasteful, it's too large, and it leads to dangerous policies; i.e., the line of thinking which says we have this vast military to use and not sit idle.
I've recently become a fan of Tool (I'm late I know). This song Right In Two keeps touching me. We human beings have been given the great gift of reason. Let's use it. Were we to cut military spending 25% we'd still have the strongest military on the planet. I'll defend Barney Frank and any other member of Congress to not bow to the pressure of the MICE and "put country first".
The Neo-cons have often remarked that it was the Clinton administration that reduced military expenditures to the point where it is hard to fight a war on two fronts. Good. If Iraq and Afghanistan could have been prevented because of low military strength the world would have been better off. Seriously though Clinton left the nation with a trillion dollar surplus, created millions of new jobs, and peacefully contained Saddam Hussein. All while reducing military spending. I'm afraid of Barney Frank's proposal why?
We have a splendid army to fight a conventional war with Russia. Problem is that can and would never happen. Can anyone imagine a conventional war between any of the 1st world countries on Earth today? The next war of that nature is going to send us all to the stone age. I'm more afraid of our bloated military and the use thereof than facing an invasion from France.
I've said my peace on election eve. Good Luck Obama!
