Vote NO on 8
To echo former Alabama Governor George Wallace, "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, and segregation forever." Governor George Wallace could not have had better foresight. Now that polls show that Proposition 8 is close to passing, we must remain vigilant and teach our children to uphold our nation's TRUE moral values. Let us take a trip down memory lane and remind ourselves about segregation.
Loving vs. Virginia allowed interracial couples to tie the knot. Now those who are advocating that we vote Yes on 8, who say that there are defending marriage, are defending a primitive form of marriage, where people feel like they have the right to control other people's decisions in regards to who they marry. For yeas women were treated as the property of men, which is why they were forced to take the man's last name, etc.
Hopefully we have come far enough to realize that you should marry who you love, not matter their sexuality. San Diego's mayor Jerry Sanders, who was once an opponent of gay marriage, realized that he was wrong, and made it known to the world that he would not stand for bigotry and intolerance.
There are still those promoting 8. You will pass by them on the way to the polling booth. When you see them, remember the pain that was caused when people embraced segregation and made it law.
I was listening to the Chistian station yesterday and the pastor told his viewers to pray before they voted. He said they could make up their own minds about which candidate to vote for, but then spoke about Prop 8. He talked about standing on a street corner with "angry" teenagers yelling at him. He claimed that they did not know what they stood for, insinuating that they were brainwashed to believe what they did. He said that they were uneducated and should research scripture. This is from an "unbiased" radio pastor.
Christianity itself is not bad: I have many good friends who are Christians. The problem is when Christians try to impose their own religious beliefs on the state. I am Jewish, and I do not see a reason to tell people to follow my religious teachings. Religion is a personal matter, but there are those who are trying to change that and trying to impose their beliefs on others by making their beliefs law!
Today you have a choice to make as you go to the ballot box. You will see opponents and proponents of Proposition 8 standing on street corners. Some Yes on 8 people will drag their children out to try to use them to promote intolerance. When you see a Yes on 8 sign, remember the words of Governor George Wallace, "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever," and when we enter that voting booth, let his vile words be a warning to you, and remind you what happens when a nation goes down a segregated path. Do not let his words shape the future of our great nation. We are better than that.
