First, we must acknowledge that there is a black market for guns. This market will always exist and you will never get rid of it. Criminals will always have guns.
If you take a look at the people around you on a daily basis, you'll find that no one is carrying a gun. Why is that? Because the majority of people are law abiding citizens. So, when you pass any sort of gun law who does it hurt? Well, not the criminal, they can care less what sort of laws are passed, they will continue to get them and carry them. This means that the laws will only affect the law abiding citizen, because they obey the law.
This also means the the law abiding citizens are left unarmed and the criminal who can care less about the law, armed! These laws affect you and I; regardless of whether you like guns or not.
Here is a silly example but a good one nonetheless: If there was a criminal walking down the street and saw a person walking with a bag that had a dollar sign $ on it, what would he think? Easy target, right? Well, the citizens aren't armed so, it's like taking candy from a baby. But what if the laws stated that anyone could carry a gun? Do you think that the criminal would have second thoughts about taking the money? What if I was walking behind you and I was carrying a gun in a holster and he could see it? How does he know that I or someone else with a gun won't come to your rescue? Let me give you some real life example of how guns can help.
Several years ago at the Appalachian School of Law there was a shooting. The gunman was able to kill two people. Two students heard the shooting and went to their cars to get their guns and helped restrain the shooter until police arrived and arrested him. If people at Virgina Tech had been armed, they may have been able to stop the shooter before he killed so many people. Let's face it, police are there to protect us buy by the time they arrive it's too late. Sad, but true all they will do is fill body bags.
If someone breaks into your house, what would you rather have, a gun or a telephone? Again, take into consideration how long it will take for police to arrive. You are the first line of defense in your home. Store them right, do not leave them out. Take a gun safety class and they will never be a threat to your family but it will help you protect them.
The National Academy of Sciences reviewed many studies and could not document a single gun regulation that reduced violent crime or murder. Washington DC has a high crime rate and in fact it went up after the had banned guns.
Guns do not kill people, there is always someone behind the trigger. Either a criminal or an irresponsible parent who left their gun out and a child gets hurt or killed.
In Japan, a few weeks ago, there was a knife incident. A man killed six people in a market. Did the knife kill the people? No, they crazy man did. Will they ban knives next? If someone gets choked to death, will they ban hands too? Silly isn't it. I had a discussion with a guy one time that said, yes ban hands next until people learn not to kill each other....um ok, he caught me by surprise with that one. I wasn't sure what to say to him.
Anyway, if you don't like guns, I understand. But I am also the first line of defense in my home with my four little ones and wife, don't support them in taking mine. Let's be America and have a choice of buying them or not buying them after all, the criminals get that choice and always will.
