So, as a little background, a school organization I work with conducted a voter registration drive several weeks back, here in Brooklyn. We signed up a ton of new voters - some other law students, and some people from the community. It was great, even though New York, especially Brooklyn, isn't really in play for any office, down to local judges and members of council.
We told people they would likely hear something in a few weeks.
Problem is, it looks like they didn't, even though they are registered.
Yesterday, a friend came up to me, wondering what happened, since he had filled out an address change form but never got a confirmation letter. It got me thinking, and I realized that I never received a sample ballot, which I generally do. I checked online, and it confirmed that I am registered, and my polling place is the same place at which I voted in the primary. However, I had to do my own legwork to make sure this was the case. I never got anything from the Board of Elections.
This does not worry me in any way regarding the outcome of the elections.
However, it does worry me, in that a lot of individuals, many who planned to vote for the first time in their lives, may not do so because they have no clue where they're supposed to vote, and have not checked out the electoral website.
If you're one of these people, it's http://www.vote.nyc.ny.us/
Anyway, I don't know if this is a proper diary, but I'm putting the word out regardless. They really need to make Election Day a national holiday.
