This evening, I received an e-mail from John McCain, asking for my vote. I replied. It felt good.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to do both. Standing with you would not be fighting for our country's future. Anti-intellectual, neo-McCarthyite warmongers like you need to step down from politics and let some grown-ups try to fix Bush's messes. Your craven dishonesty and denial about your support of failed Bush policies is pathetic.
You should have just been clear with your similarities with most Bush policies, and then have tried to explain exactly how you would implement them more successfully than he did. Instead, you flipflopped on nearly every major issue that demonstrated "independence" from the nasty neoconservatives and avoided being seen with Bush during the campaign.
Your old fashioned worldview guarantees that the US will always be at war. You may think the military is just awesome, but constant war makes nearly every other problem worse. Debt, civil rights, poverty, and the economy all get worse when politicians like you rule.
The only way you'll earn any political redemption is if you behave like a patriotic soldier who actually puts country first by supporting the Obama presidency as the legitimate expression of the will of the majority of people in the country. That would help reduce the excessive partisanship that you so often promise to transcend. Remember, plutocracy is inferior to actual democracy.
Sincerely,
(my real name)
P.S. I voted for Obama. I'm not a Democrat, but I voted the straight Democratic ticket this year.
