~~~~~~
MD-06 not reporting yet.
~~~~~~
9:40 p.m. Kent County, Kratovil abt 4,200 ; Harris abt 2,300 / All but two precincts in.
~~~~~~
9:52 p.m. Kent County, Kratovil 4,766 ; Harris 2,554 / One precinct remaining. Elks Club is always very late for unknown reasons.
~~~~~~
10:14 p.m. Cecil County, Kratovil still leading 3,993 to 3,226 / 14% of votes counted.
~~~~~~
10:29 p.m. Overall the count is 44,672 Kratovil in MD-01, and Harris ahead only by about 1,000 votes. GO FRANK! / 33% returns in.
~~~~~~
10:35 p.m. With 39 % of votes tallied, Bartlett is still ahead 59% to 38% for Dougherty. This one looks hopeless. WBAL has called it for Bartlett.
~~~~~~
10:40 p.m. Kratovil and Harris are locked in a nailbiter here.
Maryland doesn't count absentee votes until after the election. According to the state Board of Elections there are more than 31,000 absentees. A few defections among Repuglicans and a swing by "Others" could put Kratovil in Congress:
Absentee Ballot Requests as of Nov. 2 |
MD-01 | Dem | Rep | Other | |
| 13,781 | 13,637 | 4,348 | 31,766 |
~~~~~~
10:56 p.m. KRATOVIL IN FRONT! 35% of the precincts in: 48,594 for Frank and 47,768 for Harris.
~~~~~~
11:01 p.m. I'm about ready to sleep. Latest, with 50% of the precincts in, puts Kratovil ahead by 4,000 votes and a comfy 3 percentage points.
Keep your fingers crossed!
Mouseover the magic map for more ... g'night.
To see the results popup for the 1st District, mouse over the L-shaped area on eastern side of the Maryland map.
There the race is between Andy Harris, Bush wingo-publican, versus Democratic candidate Frank Kratovil in MD-01.
That seat has been held by moderate Eastern Shore Republican Wayne Gilchrest for 18 years. Many long-time Gilchrest supporters see Harris as an undesirable suburbanite, hard-right Republican.
The other contest, not likely to be as close, is MD-06. Mouse over the panhandle of rural western Maryland.
Roscoe Bartlett, Republican elected in 1993, is being challenged by Jennifer Dougherty.
You can see my personal spreadsheet for tracking the two contests, and especially local results in Cecil, Queen Anne's and Kent Counties.
