The President elect, in his acceptance speech last evening addressed his young daughters.
"I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House,"
So, the question becomes, what kind of puppy?
Certainly I don't know the young Obama ladies. And, I am not much of a 'dog-person' by nature. Although, my wife did have a dog when we met. And since then, we have invited a couple more into our lives. Whichever breed of dog is chosen, or even if the girls get a mutt, it will be an icon for America for at least the next four years.
I have become accustomed to large dogs. And I might be inclined to suggest a big fluffy dog that the girls will be able to hug. No lapdogs for the Obamas. But, that is probably just me projecting.
The Second Bush family have/had a Scottish Terrier and Springer Spaniel.
The Clinton family had a chocolate Lab.
The First Bush family had a Springer Spaniel (and matron of the H. Bush's spaniel)
The Reagans had a Bouvier de Flanders.
Carter, Ford and Nixon also all had dogs.
Lyndon Johnson had beagles - two were named "Him" and "Her" ... that's cute.
The Kennedy's had a dog that was a gift from Khruschev.
So, it seems there has been a dog in the White House for a long, long time.
What kind of puppy do you think the Obama's should invite into their family? I think a Newfoundland would be good choice, or a St. Bernard. They are big, lovable and huggable. But, maybe they will go small, and get a Dachshund? Would a mid-sized puppy like a golden retriever.
Obviously, this will be one of the biggest decisions the President Elect, and his family will make in the coming weeks.
Do you have any thoughts?
