Unfortunately that may be the reality as, despite polls, it looks like Alaskans are going to stick to their regressive ways.
What had looked like fertile ground for Democrats before the election seems to have been the only real rollback in what has otherwise been a blue wave across the country.
According to CNN, With 99% of the polls reporting convicted felon Ted Stevens leads his Democratic challenger 106,351 to 102,998 or a difference of 3,353 votes.
Still, according to the Anchorage Daily News, it may be some time until we know for sure whether we'll be rid of Sarah Palin on the national stage for a while or not.
Still to be counted are roughly 40,000 absentee ballots, with more expected to arrive in the mail, as well as 9,000 uncounted early votes and thousands of questioned ballots. The state Elections Division has up to 15 days after the election to tally all the remaining ballots before finalizing the count.
Of course everyone knows by now that if Stevens were to win he'd most likely be ousted by the new Senate and then the Governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, would choose his replacement. Three guesses as to who she would choose.
And in the other potential upset of the night in Alaska, their lone House race appears to have gone to the Republican as well. As of this posting CNN has Don Young leading Ethan Berkowitz 113,816 to 96,929 for a difference of 16,887.
A stunning turn of events to be sure. But still things are close enough that Berkowitz isn't ready to throw in the towel yet.
"We've got to count absentees, we've got to count all those early voters," Berkowitz said around 11:20 p.m.
"This election is not going to be over for several days, and we're going to fight to the very end," he (Berkowitz) said.
If these two travesties stand to pass I think these words by Congressman Young will be the best explaination anyone can offer:
Asked if he was surprised at the way the numbers were running, Young said, "Not me. ... The pollsters were wrong and they've always been wrong. ... They don't understand Alaska."
Neither, it would appear, does anyone else who's sane.
Update: Apologies, it seems Alaskans passed a law requiring a special election to replace Stevens, that's what I get for posting on 4 hours sleep...
