No, Franken probably lost. Minnesota will recount, but this isn't Florida. Coleman will go back to the Senate.
Sadly, Begich will likely not be replacing the convicted felon in Alaska.
Merkley may not replace Gordon Smith.
UPDATE: Merkley won in Oregon!!
I'm talking about a handful of true "maverick" Republicans in the Senate.
Note: I have assessed the Senators below mostly by checking their scores at ProgressivePunch.org.
Olympia Snowe (ME).
(Snowe is more of a Democrat than Tim Johnson of SD.)
Susan Collins (ME).
Arlen Specter (PA).
And, let's face it:
Norm Coleman (MN) and Gordon Smith (OR) aren't the worst guys in the world, either. (Though I'd really still like to see them lose, so keep your fingers crossed!)
I think we can only expect these Senators to be more cooperative in the 111th congress. If the whole point of the 60-seat supermajority is to avoid filibusters, then let's acknowledge that Senators like Snowe, Collins and Specter are unlikely to filibuster progressive legislation the way the 110th congress has.
Look who won't be showing up in January:
Wayne Allard (CO).
Larry Craig (ID).
Elizabeth Dole (NC).
John Sununu (NH).
Pete Domenici (NM).
John Warner (VA).
Yeah, it certainly could have gone better for the Democrats last night. But just replacing the onerous Wayne Allard with Mark Udall is going to make the Senate a much better place for progressive legislation.
And let's hope that Jim Martin can still pull out a victory against Saxby Chambliss in a runoff election. That guy's an asshole!
