Even after a well-deserved celebration, there's no time to lose in getting down to business.
So here are two humble suggestions for preparing the ground for further expansion of the new majority:
The first will be the more controversial, but I believe it's time to apply some serious trust-busting against consolidation of media ownership. It's time that the Rupert Murdochs of the world (who, by the way, is clearly not a Real American™) had their influence reduced. There should be a reversal of the deregulation of media that allowed for a small group of corporations to amass unchallenged influence over what we see, hear, and read. Net Neutrality should be a part of this as well.
Second, and more important, we need a Big Dog voting rights protection act. There are a number of elements this should contain, including
> Establishing the overriding principle that denying an individual's right to vote is not acceptable—margin of error MUST be on the individual's side.
> There can be no role for private companies to transmit, "safeguard," or otherwise control the flow of voting records, paper or electronic. These must remain under public control.
> Establish a single national standard for voting technology, including an auditable paper trail. If it's not possible to do this for all elections, mandate it for all Federal elections--it will become the default.
> Strengthen voting rights protections against Tom Delay style redistricting efforts.
These, plus the restoration of integrity to the Justice Dept. could go a long way towards preventing further Republican theft of votes, and restrict its propaganda channels.
Just a coupla' thoughts...
