Hey folks,
I feel a need to set up a protest in Los Angeles against Prop 8. Here's my idea. I want to get as many married couples out, preferably in wedding garb if it still fits and you don't mind wearing it out on the sidewalk, and dance to a bunch of groovy tunes. Preferably under a big banner that says MARRIED COUPLES AGAINST PROP 8.
Please provide suggestions if you have arranged a protest. I haven't set anything up before, just joined in on other protests, so I don't know what permissions and precautions are necessary. Details below.
This idea originated from the fact that I know something like 10 couples in my peer group who have gotten married in the last 2 years. It's just that time in our lives. I also know a bunch of gay couples, some married, some not; I need look no further than my friends to have the reality of inequality smack me in my face.
[This idea was also inspired by my pal Julian posting a video of thousands of Seattleites, heading out on the streets to dance to the techno version of "Don't Stop Believin'" after Obama was declared President. I have to watch that thing at least once a day. http://www.youtube.com/...]
Anyhow, I am thinking of setting this protest up by eViting my friends and passing it along virally. We'd meet up in a very central location, and very visible: I'm thinking of going for Hollywood, WeHo, or Downtown. I don't know anything about restrictions on protests, though. I also need suggestions about how to get a PA system that either plugs into municipal power or has a big ol' generator next to it (rather noisy and yucky; I'd prefer not to do that if possible).
That's all I got right now. Dozens of married people (and other couples, and anyone who wants to show up) dancing under a banner against Prop 8.
**edit** Thanks for the comments so far. I don't know yet about the logistics, but it appears that noonprop8.com and this site are good for getting the word out on setting up a protest:
