Yes, it is true that African American women went for Prop 8 three - one, but they were only 6% of the electorate. The claim that every other group but AA's voted against it is total and complete bullshit. If only 75% of 6% of the electorate voted for it it would have failed. There is no exit data on AA men because they composed such a small portion of the electorate. The truth is white voters only voted it down 49 - 51. It took a lot more than 75% of 6% of the electorate to push it through.
The media is trying to pit gays against blacks, and it sounds like people are falling for it. Look at the exit polls yourself. The only group that didn't support Prop 8 was white women, who voted against it 53 - 47 and made up 37% of the electorate. "Other races" comprising 9%of the electorate went 49 - 51, hardly a clear defeat, and every other group voted for it.
I'm very, very sorry that Prop 8 did not fail. I support gay marriage and am entirely against using the consitution of any state, or the United States, to restrict rights. But all of this finger pointing is not going to move the cause forward.
So let me say it again. Prop 8 passed because of a lot of different types of people, not just African Americans.
