We all have cause to be happy with the results of the election. That's all in the past now. We've pulled the nation back from the peril of a Republican Administration.
Hooray for us. That's great.
But we now have a Democratic Leadership that has shown little interest in the real interests of the American people.
In this context consider this:
Pelosi Pledges to Rule From Middle
The country must be governed from the middle," Pelosi, D-Calif., told reporters Wednesday. "You have to bring people together to reach consensus on solutions that are sustainable and acceptable to the American people."
She, and the entire Dem Leadership, needs to be set straight on who, exactly, constitutes the middle. We've seen what they thought in the past...
They've gone along with everything from torture to the gutting of habeas corpus, the recent bailout scheme, spying on Americans, giving immunity to lawbreakers, letting citizens defy orders to appear before Congress. They've allowed massive financial corruption in the conduct of our wars, and in the the enforcement of our laws. They've acquiesced in appoint judges and justice department officials who should not have been appointed...
The track record is undeniable.
Perhaps you might say "Well, that's all in the past. Now we have a new Administration, we have the reins, we call the shots." And you might be right.
All except for that filibuster-proof Senate, eh? They've already been putting out the meme of how this is going to disable Dem agendas. So you might be right, but that's a hell of a bet make.
For one thing, they're getting more money from banks and corporations than they ever dreamed possible. Maybe that won't count, now. For another, there's little evidence that the Dem Leadership--Congressional in particular--is particularly far-sighted, or even smart.
Cunning, as in winning an election, we can allow. Grasp of reality otherwise: Not so much. Devotion to the interests of the people? You must be joking.
The people who are going to be devoted to our interests are you and me.
The thing we have to do, and well before oaths are taken in January, is to establish that "business-as-usual" will not be tolerated. The real middle in America wants everything ('cept 1 or 2) that liberals want. And by overwhelming majorities.
As Sam Smith noted
[The Democratic Party] is not a party that would, in these times, have passed Social Security, Medicare or minimum wage.
And in your heart, you know he's right.
