I have never been a follower of "The Colbert Report" on a regular basis, but I saw that Rachel Maddow was going to be on the show last night so I watched. During the always satirical interview that Colbert always gives, she brought up a very valid point.
I want the government to run well and I think that when conservatives crusade against government while they are try to be appointed to head the government ...I think that's weird. Why would you hire somebody who wants to abolish something to run that thing
Forgive me if I'm a word or two off. I typed that after listening, I can't find the transcript.
So here we are in 2008, yet it seems no republican in this world has their head on straight. How can they fight for less government and less hand out, yet be completely outraged at what happened with Katrina? Colbert brings this up later in the interview. Welcome to America with no government. It doesn't make sense! The people that argue these points are obviously not looking at the whole picture. And would someone please explain to me how the patriot act is a republican small government thing to do? Or how gitmo is a republican small government thing to do? These things are ludicrous! Yet it seems that the far right is wondering why the republican base is dwindling, and why states like mine, of North Carolina, were blue states this year. It has more to do with the fact that we are tired of this hypocritical bull that the republican party is feeding the nation through their spin and their heartbeat of "fixed news" as my hero Olbermann likes to call it.
So, if anyone can, explain it to me. Why do republicans vote for big office, yet do no believe in big government. That is like if I were gay and were protesting against gay rights. It doesn't make sense.
Now I understand why the evangelicals vote the way that they do. Their votes and party affiliation is based on morality that they believe to be correct and true even in politics, but... for all of those not fitting into that category: I think you need to go see a doctor.
Small government creates big problems. No government action on important country matters: effect us all in a very negative way. If you don't want big government in your way, you are shooting yourself in the foot, because when a disaster such as katrina hits your way I wonder who is going to be there for you and help you. If you have a child with special needs, I wonder what programs you are going to seek. If your rights get taken away by someone, who are you going to go to?
Government runs this country while you are asleep. Government protects us from other nations that want to kill us. Government does not run your life, rather it runs the things that help you. We are not socialists. We are not communists. The government helps to protect the rights and the freedom that we have. They ensure our safety. This is not 1984. We are not living in 'A Brave New World'.
So why republicans? Why do you attempt to elect that which you cannot stand. If John McCain were president, should not you rebel? I mean he would be of the highest office of the government which you cannot stand? Should not he rebel against himself? Should not George Bush do the same? Should not republicans every where, especially of the far right persuasion revolt to this America that they love, instead of calling the left "anti american"
None of it makes sense. I guess that is just my rant of the early morning. Ms. Maddow, you are amazing. You helped me realize how ridiculous the right is. You and Keith are my power two hour every night. Not that you or him will ever read this, but I'm sure that you would both agree on the hypocrisy going on here with the republican party as stated above.
