The future hubby and I were looking for a movie to watch via Comcast On-Demand last weekend, and scrolled all the way through the "new" listings without finding anything until we reached the very bottom of the list... and saw the title: "Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden?" We were intrigued.
I clicked the "info" button to see if this was a "Control Room"-type expose and was thrilled to see the name Morgan Spurlock.
You remember Morgan Spurlock!
Well after learning that he and his wife (the Vegan from "Supersize Me") are expecting a baby, the genius who bravely ate nothing but McDonald's for a month to bring us "Supersize Me", decides to take it upon himself to find Osama Bin Laden and bring him to justice to make the world a safer place for his unborn child.
I don't mean he "Googles" Bin Laden on the internets; he actually trains as a fighter, learns Arabic, and goes to the Middle East to search high and low for Osama.
From Morocco to Tora Bora, Spurlock interviews everyone he meets on how they view America, where they think Osama Bin Laden is hiding, and whose side they're on in the war on terror.
The movie is laugh-out-loud funny at the same time as it is eye-opening and worldview-altering. What perhaps shocked me the most was that Spurlock spent a great deal of time in and around Jerusalem (including the most dangerous parts), and the only place where he was treated terribly (to the point that people were spitting on him and throwing things at him) was in the Hacidic Jewish quarter. Spurlock seems puzzled and genuinely hurt that he is received with such contempt.
I won't spoil the ending other than saying Spurlock got a lot closer than Bush did to finding Bin Laden. It's inspiring to know that President-Elect Obama will take this quest more seriously. Perhaps he can give Spurlock a call.
