Just in case you don't
"The philosophy that supports and encourages jihad around the world against Americans came to live here in New Jersey..."
Those words were spoken by US Attorney Chris Christie last May. It was a shocking statement for a shocking revelation: As many as six foreign-born individuals had been planning to attack Fort Dix in order to "hit a heavy concentration of soldiers." Only quick action by federal law enforcement had prevented a massacre.
What a different story we're hearing now.
The headline of a NJ Star Ledger newspaper account -
FBI informant testifies suspect refused to plan attack
The FBI informant who infiltrated a band of alleged South Jersey terrorists complained in September 2006 that one suspect "was gonna have a problem with me" because he kept refusing to plan, train or arrange meetings to discuss an attack.
The comment by the informant, Mahmoud Omar, was recounted for jurors this morning in Camden, where five Muslim immigrants are being tried on charges of plotting to kill U.S. soldiers.
Defense attorneys contend that Omar, an Egyptian national and convicted felon, concocted and encouraged the conspiracy so he could keep collecting a paycheck.
But two of the five had never heard of the plot. A third failed to conduct ordered recon. They failed to follow the urgings of the informant to take oaths of honor to create carnage at Fort Dix. In fact, they failed to take any action at all that wasn't initiated by the FBI informant.
This brings up the point that we may be looking at a classic case of entrapment. The idea came from the informant; the informant not only induced the action, but badgered other participants; and the defendants were very simply not ready to carry out their plot. The only evidence that they were a clear and present danger is that they tried to buy weapons from the FBI informant.
